~ Universal Precautions ~

Washing hands with soapTo avoid getting infected with HIV, Hepatitis B or C or other communicable diseases use “Universal Precautions” each and every time you come in contact with bodily fluids or fecal matter.

  • Cover Cuts- Keep any open sores or cuts covered with a plastic bandage.
  • Wear Latex Gloves- Always wear latex gloves whenever there is any risk of coming into contact with blood or other bodily fluids. Never re-use latex gloves. Dispose of gloves in a plastic garbage bag after each use. Wash your hands before putting on the gloves and after taking them off.
  • Wash Hands- Always wash your hands after you have had contact with blood or body fluids, after going to the bathroom, before preparing or eating food and after wearing latex gloves. Use a gentle anti-bacterial soap and hot water. Do not use harsh detergents that may cause hands to chap or crack. Lather hands with soap for at least 20 seconds before rinsing.
  • Clean Up- All blood and body fluid spills should be cleaned up immediately with a fresh mixture of bleach and water. The bleach to water ratio is: 1:9 (1 part bleach to 9 parts water). Disposable cloths should be used and thrown away in a plastic garbage bag immediately following clean-up. *Remember to wear latex gloves during clean-up.
  • Wash Clothes- Wash soiled clothing separately in hot soapy water and dry in a hot dryer, or have clothes dry-cleaned. Between washes, soiled clothing should be stored separately in sealed plastic bags.
  • Discard Garbage- Use caution when discarding garbage and other waste that may contain infected materials or used needles. Never compress garbage with hands or open shoes, as you risk getting pierced by sharp objects that may contain infected fluids (e.g., broken glass with blood on it)
